Lighting:
- There are 3 basic types of lighting:
- Ambient: Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting provides overall illumination for a room, and is intended to create a uniform light level throughout a space.
- Accent: Accent lighting draws attention to a particular object, such as artwork, sculpture, plants or bookcases.
- Task: Targeted to a particular area of a room, task lighting is intended to illuminate a specific function.
- Another important source of lighting is natural daylight.

Secondary Lighting Systems:
The following lighting systems do not contribute to functional lighting:
- Accent; used to highlight points of interest
- Architectural; found in coves [indirect light], under-surface lighting of treads in stairs, grooves in columns.
- Decorative; change in colour, type of pendants or light fittings.
- Effect; it may be a point of interest in a space for example back lighting.
- Mood; used to recreate the time of the day, season or event.
